[postgis-users] why specify spheroid?

Willy,
Not that newbie of a question. Actually its probably not obvious but
distance_sphere and distance_spheroid don't even look at the srid of the
geometry fed to them. If you give it a non-long lat coordinates you will
also get garbage results as I recall.
So they always assume point and point is long lat.

might loose a few if i get to understand this.)
Why do distance_spheroid et al. require that you specify the spheroid?
Doesn't the srid provide enough information?
