Hi, You need to use ST_AsText(the_geom) function to display geometry in human readable form.

Shapefiles can contain invalid geometries and they can be displayed by many applications without any problems. I guess, in Your case, You have some polygons which does not finish in exactly same point, they started. - They are not closed.

What kind of software are You using _
