Paul's on the money. I'm a reasonable Oracle Spatial expert and have found learning
PostGIS (or SQL Server 2008 Spatial etc) exceedingly easy. The "difficult" thing is
not so much the large/rich PostGIS function-set (what is the best way to skin the cat) but 
the fact that to be really efficient in any database requires one to understand the whole
database architecture and operating environment (that comes with time and experience).
