Hi Chris,

If you consider Debian Squeeze (the most recent stable release), you can 
install PostgreSQL 8.4 and PostGIS 1.5.1 with a single command:

     apt-get install postgresql-8.4-postgis libpostgis-java

I'm sorry for my unsolicited suggestion.
Anyway, I wish it helps you and make your life a lot easier.
