You will need to use PostGIS 2.x (currently 2.1). If you have one or
more existing databases that use PostGIS, then before upgrading, be
sure to see the "hard upgrade" instructions to dump your database(s):
http://postgis.net/docs/postgis_installation.html#hard_upgrade
After dumping your v1.5 database(s), you can upgrade to a more recent
version of PostGIS. There are several options, such as compiling from
source. The easiest is to use the PGDG Apt repository, with
instructions at http://wiki.postgresql.org/wiki/Apt
After installing the v2.x version of PostGIS, then complete the
remaining steps in the hard upgrade procedure.
