I can't comment on what's happening inside the program but I notice your
test point is very far away from your projection origin. Perhaps you're
specifiying longitude & latitude in reverse order? (proj likes to have lon
lat, not lat lon.) Your projection origin is approx 39N, 8W but your test
point is 40E, 10S. Perhaps you mean to have 40N, 10W.
I get this with proj:
-10 40
40464.07 338683.60
then this with proj -I:
40464.07 338683.60
