Your system looks buggy.  I ran this on NetBSD/i386 4.99.3 with

gcc version 4.1.2 20060628 prerelease (NetBSD nb2 20060711)

and a Core Duo and got OK!.

(But, I had to delete getch() - that doesn't appear to be part of C99,
but curses.)
