Ipbüker has also published a journal version of the conference paper:

    An Inverse Solution to the Winkel Tripel Projection Using Partial Derivatives.
    Cengizhan Ipbüker, CaGIS Journal, Vol. 29, no. 1 (Jan 2002).

I read it some years ago. If I remember right, it was 
specifically targeted at Winkel Tripel, more so than the 
conference version.  
That is, for someone who is rusty on bivariate Newton-Raphson
- like me! - the CaGIS version may be easier to implement.
