I should have given a source for my claim that sterea is better

By running your command I got the coordinates I expected - thank you very much! (I thought +towgs84 parameter implied using +to +init=epsg:4326)

There is a slight difference between the ESRI and EPSG projections (as depicted in the images attached), but I'm not sure which is closer to the truth ( I suspect the ESRI projection - but my data is not that accurate, so I could be wrong).
