I would like to suggest the inclusion of the Natural Earth projection in
PROJ.4. Natural Earth is a new projection for small-scale world maps. Here
is more information on the projection:
http://www.shadedrelief.com/NE_proj/

etc.

Could be my error, but as closer I get to a pole, the more inaccurate the
inverse gets.
The error amounts to several degrees. Useless!

Examples:

R = 6371008.7714 m

lat, lon = 70.0, 120.0
-> x,y = 8746490.08803389, 7638351.973962101
inverse, back to lat, lon: 69.99209, 119.99120

lat, lon = 80.0, 120.0
-> x,y = 7857518.066663387, 8518264.078952862
inverse, back to lat, lon: 79.86806, 119.79482

lat, lon = 85.0, 120.0
-> x,y = 7268396.11454517, 8868081.540119916
inverse, back to lat, lon: 84.39404, 118.66044

lat, lon = 89.0, 120.0
-> x,y = 6604995.340672151, 9042363.459174621
inverse, back to lat, lon: 86.95668, 113.64953

I used the JavaScript code.
