[Proj] pj_transform for the GIS novice

Dear List,
 
I'm using the latest libgeotiff library to read GeoTIFF files . I want to get the corner coordinates in planar UTM metres (with ZONE info) and/or WGS84 lats and longs.
 
It looks like pj_transform will do the job, but I'm at a bit of a loss as to how to get from libgeotiff to Proj and back again.
 
Can anyone give me any pointers? It would be greatly appreciated!
