I had misinterpreted the short metadata 'remarks' at EPSG:6326 
<https://epsg.org/datum_6326/World-Geodetic-System-1984-ensemble.html>. 
Adding some references here:

  * The 'datum ensemble' concept is defined by OGC
    <https://docs.opengeospatial.org/as/18-005r4/18-005r4.html#97>.
  * More extensive explanation on the WGS84 ensemble (2019) is (e.g.) at
    https://dpipwe.tas.gov.au/land-tasmania/datum-modernisation/web-mapping-and-wgs84-web-mercator.
    And it is referred in
