As you said this is not a new issue - and the named options are clear, but kind
of circumvent the point of the standalone installer.  It should be self
contained.

So the only better idea that I had is to exclude hardly used grids.  But it
there's no data that might tells use which those could be, that's also not an
option.

Currently the user is just pointed at the cdn to download a grid if it's
missing.  But we won't have a backchannel to track that either - and won't do
any for the same reasons (we just evaluate which clients fetch the qgis update
info to do analytics.qgis.org).

It's probably the best bet, as it would fetch a grid that the user actually
needs instead of of fetching all the grids at the user's location, that he
might not need at all (eg. grids for legacy crses that are hardly used
nowadays) or not even work in.

But there still might be environments where downloads aren't possible at all.

But yes, maybe a thin and a fat installer are the best option.
