Fred, what version of PROJ4 are you using?  I'm using the PROJ4 4.7
codebase, and the PJ_aea.c file (dated 2009-01-06) looks different to
the one you have sent.  In particular, it doesn't have a reference to
proj_auth_inv, which is in the lines you highlighted.

I've attached that file for your reference.

The Albers Proj4J code is pretty well tested at this point.  It agrees
with some coordinate transform values obtained from elsewhere, and
also using the forward/inverse test.

I think it might be best to try and track the latest version of PROJ4.
