I am talking about the git clone used to build the docs.
For some reasons it has differences from the master, try git status over it.
I am afraid the old files are useless without using the msgmerge
command on master files.
This was documented in the readme.rst file, now that information is missing:

The basic steps are:
* editor edits translation, for example using this page for the
preamble.rst in "Gentle GIS introduction":
http://translate.qgis.org/it/qgis/LC_MESSAGES/gentle_gis_introduction/00_preamble.po/translate/
* after the edits, editor can commit and push changes going to the
review page: http://translate.qgis.org/it/qgis/LC_MESSAGES/gentle_gis_introduction/review.html
(clicking on "Commit to VCS")
* from the same page, before pushing, the editor can pull before
pushing (cliking on "Update from VCS")
It would be nice to create a Pootle for QGIS user guide, but I am out
of time nowadays :(

The git repository that Pootle is using is, at this time, the same one
being used for building the documentation.
So it is automatically pulled as per crontab.
And Pootle will "see" new files eventually added to the central repository.

I see Pootle just as a replacement for people willing to contribute
without the overhead of mastering git.
And, at some extent, as a way to get general statistics from the on
going translation effort.
I have added qgis-community in copy to this email, as I think this is
information to share.
