agreed. But here I was talking about the sphinx build environment: how 
to pull all these branches (or parts of it, as not all docs in the 
documentation project should be build for every version), and build them 
in a way that coming from the website it is possible to link to 
different versions (which have or have not the same theme).
BUT all as simple as possible, and reusing a main conf.py :-)

According to Paolo, a general search is not needed.

So then I think we go for:
- git pull different projects in source directory
- either try to have a main-conf.py with some project specific additions 
(eg, the abbreviations are defined per version/branch, the same with the 
images)
- build all projects to one build dir one by one.
