there's some code for mysql provider but it doesn't work and probably
should be rewritten from scratch since provider interface has changed
a lot from the last work being done there.

It should be possible to use OGR provider to use MySQL database, but
there is no UI for doing it automatically - but should be possible to
create a simple plugin that would provide such interface, AFAIK
someone's been already doing such a plugin for Oracle databases.
