Hi Tim:

I was thinking in provide a way for users to specify
an ogr URI in new connection dialog for database layers. For example
the user could choose in new connection dialog beetween
Postgres, OgrOracle, OgrMySQL, OgrPostgres, and OgrGeneric
types. In the case of OgrGeneric it could be only a QTextEdit in new
connection dialog where the user could write the URI(OCI:freddy/freddy at 192.168.1.3/XE)
instead of specifying the parts of the uri(host, database, type, etc). This way users needing
access to other types of databases like arcsde could rebuild gdal/ogr with arcsde support and just use
ogr generic connection to load their layers into qgis.

Best regards
Godofredo Contreras
