[Qgis-developer] New QGIS 0.11.0 Metis Windows Pre-Release Test Installer

Marco,

I have tried and cannot get qgis to read data from my gps unit without
cajoling the device settings into working. Basically, I have to edit
my device and put the gpsbabel command into the device setting because
%in and %out strings are not working correctly.

For example, to get a waypoint layer loaded from the GPS device, I
have to click on the device settings, go to waypoint download and make
the line look like this:
%babel -i garmin -o gpx -f com4 -F "C:\Documents and Settings\User Name
\Desktop\test.gpx"
You have to hit "update device" to get this setting to stick.

Then I have to fill in the "Save as" box in the main GPS tools dialog
with the path to the above test.gpx file. I tell qgis to call the new
layer "test".

This works for loading the waypoint data from the device. You have to
similarly create the path (hard code it in the device settings) to the
gpx file for uploads and downloads to a gps device. This is not at all
ideal.

I think we need a developer with GPS hardware to work out the kinks in
the GPS Tools plugin, because there are clearly some issues. I have to
do some hard coding of the device in OS X, but paths to files are
working there. It is not ideal, but this is how the GPS Tool has
functioned for me in OS X as long as I can remember. I've never tried
in Windows before.

Possibly, this functionality can be tested with an emulator. A search
brought up gpsgate, but not free. There is a 14-day trial. http://GpsGate.com/index.php?id=13

Let me know if this installer should be considered complete. My
thinking is the GPS Tools is a broader issue, needs to be filed as a
bug (I'll do that shortly), and things move forward with 0.11.0 release.
