Borys and Paolo,

I also just updated  QgsRasterLayer::identify() to return a boolean. If 
the provider key is wms then it should do nothing and will return false, 
otherwise it will build the result string(s) and return true. It would 
be good if you could try again with revision 9414 and see if it still 
crashes -- the plugin may indeed still need to be updated.

There are several other methods that should first check to make sure the 
provider is not wms.
