OK, now it compiles and works. It solves bugs:

and make the shell generally much more usable.
It should be tested on windows and on osx, for which it will probably
require some additional tweaks. Resizing has still minor quirks.
Please test it and give us feedback.
We will be happy to commit it when ready.
