For the records: upgrading to debian unstable solved both compilation and
startup problems (thus, I guess it was all due to misaligned libraries).
I still have the

  File "/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.5/PyQt4/Qwt5/__init__.py", line 32, in
    from Qwt import *
ImportError: /usr/lib/pymodules/python2.5/PyQt4/Qwt5/Qwt.so: undefined symbol:
_ZN13QwtLegendItem17setIdentfierWidthEi

for the two plugins, but this is a minor issue now for me.
