Yeah, my question was much more trivial.

Take an ogr layer, say a shapefile, and add it to the map. Then add a
grass vector layer. Un-check both in the legend then toggle editing for
both: the shapefile nodes won't shown in the map canvas while the grass
vector ones will do.

I just asked if this difference has a purpose or not. If not, I guess
that the two situation must behave the same way.
