Thats something to decide for our release manager.
As far as I understood the 1.0.x branch was just meant to contain bug fixes and not new features.

Yes, of course, but the (correct, IMHO) objection from Markus Neteler is
that in this way an important functionality has been removed, which
shouldn't be. I think that backporting it is quite simple and respect
the principle of minimum surprise for the user.
