Thanks for the tips. My orthophotos are in MrSid format and include
overviews, but I could add overviews to my topo files. I like the idea
of a VRT file being more efficient for QGIS, so I'll explore this.

It seems I shouldn't be concerned with the CRS look up failures (?)
