Hello John

According to your traceback the mapscript module has been loaded.

What projection are you using in your mapfile? The mapfile plugin always 
requests the image as WGS84 at the moment, so this could be the cause of the 
error.

You can try rendering the mapfile from a console and see if you still get the 
error:

shp2img -m yourmapfile.map > mapfile.png
