[Qgis-developer] Varying outline width according to attribute

Hi,
I just started using qgis and I am writing a plugin with loads the shape files and varies the width of outline according to attribute.
Looks like varying the width it is not possible viz layer properties and symbology way.
Can anyone help me in implementing this functionality?
