[Qgis-developer] slow reading shp

Hi all.
I found that reading large shapefiles (thousands of polygons) takes really a lot of
time, to the point that qgis is almost unusable.
This is a frequent complaint by users: can we do something about it? One data set we
could use for testing is the comuni layer from:
http://www.pcn.minambiente.it/PCNDYN/catalogowfs.jsp
http://wms.pcn.minambiente.it/cgi-bin/mapserv.exe?map=/ms_ogc/wfs/comuni_wfs.map
http://wms.pcn.minambiente.it/cgi-bin/mapserv.exe?map=/ms_ogc/wfs/comuni_wfs_f32.map
http://wms.pcn.minambiente.it/cgi-bin/mapserv.exe?map=/ms_ogc/wfs/comuni_wfs_f33.map
just go to the wfs (with the plugin) and save as shp (beware: non-free licence, you
cannot redistribute it).
