[Qgis-developer] option to pause canvas repainting

I don't if it's already available: is it possible to switch canvas
repainting to pause mode? This is a useful option available in various gis
systems, to allow setting symbology, moving layers, etc. without having the
canvas to be refreshed on every 'apply'.
