Hi there Daniel,
Would just running gdalbuildvrt on the raster sets and then loading that
into QGIS get you what you need? QGIS can consume VRT's just fine and I
have had great luck emulating the tileindex functionality that way.

Subject: [Qgis-developer] Support for tiled layers
Hi Devs,
Has any thoughts ever been put into supporting the concept of tiled
layers (for images or vectors), the equivalent of MapServer's TILEINDEX
concept (http://mapserver.org/optimization/tileindex.html), or Seamless
tables in the MapInfo world?
We have a client who has a need for this, they have hundreds of images
that they need to load all at once, and to which they need to apply a
common classification or color correction. You can imagine that applying
the settings on each image one by one through the GUI is not very
practical. If we had this concept of a tiled layer, we could just point
QGIS to the tile index file, and then applying the settings once to the
tiled layer would apply them to all the images that it refers to.
Or is there another way to do this through the GUI without scripting? I
admit I am not a QGIS guru and may have missed this option, but I
thought I would ask here to get your thoughts.
Thanks
Daniel
P.S. I will be away from my email next week, but I will check my mail
and respond as soon as I'm back.
