Can you reply via the lists rather - the Ubuntu packagers can then try to help.
I believe this error is because you need to add the grass libs dir to /etc/ld.so.conf and then run sudo ldconfig.

In turn on qgis 1.4 for the first time on Jaunty occurs this error:
