[Qgis-developer] Noticeable delays when editing on a remote PostGIS DB

Folks,

I'd like to make you aware of some surprising, maybe 'unfortunate'
delays when trying to use QGIS for editing polygon layers on a remote
PostGIS DB via encrypted network tunnel.

According to tests kindly performed by Juergen Fischer, the user
interface is quite snappy when editing on a local PostGIS DB, so
apparently our issue is related to the somewhat 'narrow' network
connection.
So I've made an annotated log of the server queries as performed by
QGIS (fresh build from today's SVN), build on Debian Lenny against GDAL
1.6.0, in order to find out what's going on behind the scene.

What strikes me is the action of fetching every object (1347 objects in
this case, most layers are a lot more dense) in a 20x20 degree !! box
(that's magnitudes wider than the current view), which happens three
times: On selecting the object to be edited, on selecting the node to
be moved, on actually moving the node.

Does fetching from such a huge region happen intentionally ?

The log is a available here:

Cheers,
	Martin.
