Not really.  The gps tools uses gpsbabel.  gpsbabel can access the garmin
directly via usb w/o a special kernel driver.

The garmin_gps module provides a /dev/ttyUSBn device for the garmin.  At the
same time is blocks direct usb accesses to the GPS.  So when the module is
loaded, gpsbabel cannot be used with "-f usb:" anymore.

However gps tools/gpsbabel apparently can use the /dev/ttyUSBn device to access
the gps.  I just downloaded waypoints, routes and tracks from my hcx, which
garmin_gps (of kernel 2.6.34.1) was loaded.  Although [1] claims that this is
"depressingly uncommon".

Still that probably won't work while gpsd is running.
