Hold on to your $, I doubt that the behavior would be any better on
windows, especially if it's a bug (Not to mention that 64 bit is not
readily available on that platform).

Could you provide more details on the format of the dataset, how many
features and which particular symbology component causes the issue?

A sample dataset would be great too, if possible post it to a server
somewhere that devs can get a copy to test with.

If you're interested, building a copy of qgis from source with
DEBUG=TRUE might also provide more details when the crash occurs.
This procedure is quite easy on Ubuntu based linux.
