desktop is fast
and so is QGIS server; compare
http://map2.jena.de/wms/test?LAYERS=Stadtplan%2Ccategorized%20style&FORMAT=image%2Fpng&DPI=96&SERVICE=WMS&VERSION=1.1.1&REQUEST=GetMap&STYLES=&EXCEPTIONS=application%2Fvnd.ogc.se_inimage&SRS=EPSG%3A31468&BBOX=4470654.5050516,5638947.4195052,4471988.6271692,5639432.5548208&WIDTH=1012&HEIGHT=368
and
http://map2.jena.de/wms/test?LAYERS=Stadtplan%2Crule-based%20style&FORMAT=image%2Fpng&DPI=96&SERVICE=WMS&VERSION=1.1.1&REQUEST=GetMap&STYLES=&EXCEPTIONS=application%2Fvnd.ogc.se_inimage&SRS=EPSG%3A31468&BBOX=4470654.5050516,5638947.4195052,4471988.6271692,5639432.5548208&WIDTH=1012&HEIGHT=368

both are reasonably fast

I have no idea where the problem comes from because on my PC (running
OpenSUSE 11.4) both layers are fast in QGIS WebClient

what would you need? project and a dbdump? If you are willing to look
into this I would send it to you with a PM.
