[Qgis-developer] Loading raster stats: grass/gdal slowdown?

Hi all.
Loading a raster is in certain conditions unacceptably slow, and as we have seen this
is largely due to stats collections. At least for GRASS rasters, gdal knows he cannot
compute stats; e.g. in R:

Geospatial Data Abstraction Library extensions to R successfully loaded
Loaded GDAL runtime: GDAL 1.8.1, released 2011/07/09
Path to GDAL shared files: /usr/share/gdal/1.8

statistics not supported by this driver

Is it possible that QGIS is trying to calculate stats, and this is a reason for the
slowdown?
