Thanks! I did not know those older APIs were online. I can't find any
reference to them anywhere on qgis.org.

Should they be listed here [0] or here [1]?

Do you think the cleaning up of 'added in x.x' references I mentioned
should be done? (To source, not necessarily to the static API html
pages for 1.8.)
