OK, I found the answer to my sub question:

iface.legendInterface().setLayerVisible(vlayer,False)

This time I found the answer from this link:

But QgsLegendInterface is not referenced in QgsVectorLayer or QgsMapLayer...

Will stop complaining now and get on with programming, sorry.
