[Qgis-developer] Final Logo Pick

The current logo doesn't convey at all professional status, it looks really outdated and amateur,  difficult decisions need to be made, even big companies rebrand because of customers

I would suggest releasing a press release mentioning dropping Quantum for QGIS only.

QGIS is an awesome software but it gets less attention due to the branding around it and marketing, a better logo is needed, a better modern website, complete branding and finally some active marketing.

Now what's the roadmap ahead for the project not in programming terms but in market terms, what is QGIS goal beyond being great GIS software

Hi

I have to say when I compare them to our existing logo, none of them
really do it for me. Perhaps we need a new mandate to freshen our
exisiting logo rather than to try to create something new. Our current
logo may have issues but it is:

* distinctive
* bright
* clear
* recognisable
* already has a strong association with our 'brand'

If the new logo does not meet these or in some way offer an
improvement over the old, we should rather focus on tweaking what we
already have.

Ignoring the current contest and whether any of those designs work, I personally think the current logo's look is unprofessional enough to actually be considered a detriment to the project at this point.

While that may seem like a strong statement, I think difficult decisions, like abandoning the old logo and going for a more modern and professional look, need to be made if QGIS is really going to have a chance to directly compete with the likes of ESRI and other commercial products in the enterprise, institutional or governmental workplace.

I do think QGIS 2.0 has a chance to make great inroads into such areas, but the project needs to win over those users. Whether we, as open source developers, like it or not marketing is a key factor. First impressions are often greatly influenced by such things as logos.

Sorry to say, but I think the current logo may unfortunately convey the following to users in the enterprise, institutional or governmental workplace:  amateur.

After spending quite a bit of time 'under the hood' I can honestly say the programming comprising QGIS is anything but amateur. It is very high quality and painstakingly well thought out and implemented. I strive every time I write code to meet those criteria.

Not only do I think the project's logo needs to meet the expectations of an ever-expanding number of existing and potential users, I also believe it needs to do justice to the quantity and quality of the work done by so many devoted developers and testers, and to those who support the project, either financially, via the community or by providing user services.

Sorry, again, but I think the current logo falls far short of those goals, and any focus on revamping it is just prolonging the inevitable decision to move to a better one.

Best regards,

Larry
