[Qgis-developer] Auto increment field for shapefiles?

Hi all.
I know this is a long standing issue. The current suggestion (adding $rownum) is
feasible, but cumbersome. Alternatives (spatialite, postgis, soon also gpkg) are
scaring for many. Are there any plans to implement it directly in shp?
