[Qgis-developer] dbManager: Store queries in QGIS profile?

Hi Oliver and Paolo,

Thanks for your feedback.
I see your point of project specific queries. That is probably the most common situation.
The use cases I had in mind were, that

a) some queries go (with minor modifications) through several projects (like e.g. point-sampling layers with environmental information or overlay statistics with land cover data and so on), and

b) such frequently used types of queries could also be useful to be shared among users of one institution.
For such queries e.g. the QGIS profile could be a nice place to store them. However the parallel solution (project and probably QGIS profile in future) you sketched, Oliver, sounds perfect. That way modifications of “template queries” for a specific project can be stored separately…

I shall open a ticket for that asap (at the moment redmine says it is under heavy load and I should try again later…).

Cheers
Stefan

Hi Stefan,
Could you please open feature requests for these?
Thanks.

Hi !

Technically it's easy to store the queries globally (I did the implementation of the store queries feature some time ago, and guess it is around 1 hour work)

But I think we have to leave the possibility to store them in the project file as well, as some queries are really project-specific (actually all of them in my use cases).
Probably the best would be to allow both. There would be two store buttons, and the two categories could be listed in the same drop down box with a line separator.

Bests,

Olivier

Dear devs,

QGIS is an excellent frontend to PostGIS with lots of functionality.
One thing I was wondering is, why does dbManager store queries in the project file and not in e.g. the QGIS user profile (.qgis2) or the registry? Is that on purpose?

I was planning to deploy some default queries which might be used in several different projects or by different people via a batch file I already use for import of QGIS settings on new installations (along with PostGIS connections and so on).

I see that I can add my queries to project templates, but that would mean I have to maintain them at (at least) at three different places (in each project). For me it would be more convenient to have them separated from the projects. Could that be an option for the future? BTW. The Combo-box could be a bit longer, so that names for the queries are more readable…

Cheers
Stefan
