Thanks for the info - for people smarter than I, here are the first lines
from the Qt tab in the 'Log Messages Panel' after launching a nightly QGIS
build and opening a project - the last 4 lines repeat a few hundred times:

This did the trick! Now QGIS launches clean. I forgot to mention that I
already tried a re-install of the matplotlib Python package from
Kyngchaos.com which did not help.
