Hi John,

This is quite close from what I'm doing! Good job, I might get some
inspiration ;)

 Whenever this is in core, it might make your plugin redundant. If you
want to keep it alive, so you'll have to update your plugin to still
work with plugin settings. That will be in 3.0 anyway, so not in a very
close future.
