I would also prefer this, but nobody form OSGeo expressed interest in 
this. I can try again if you suggest to do so, but I'm rather skeptical: 
everything seems to be geared towards large companies.

Good suggestion. These are the first possibile solutions that come to my 
mind:
- setup a QGIS paypal/similar services account and manage money directly
advantages: no other subjects involved, full control
disadvantages: a fair amount of work for handling and managing
- use the services of some OSGeo local chapter
adv: spreading out of the effort
disdv: we have to trust an external subject
additional suggestions?
