 On Ubuntu I used jasper because as indicated in a subsequent response,
 Kakadu is not free.

 However, a tried the test images with binary distribution of FWTools
 v2.2.1 (for windows), which is built with kakadu, and it also corrupted
 the colors.

 This is what lead me conclude that it is not an error directly introduced
 by QGIS, but some kinda of GDAL<->Kakadu conflict/miscommunication.
