 So you also have verified that this is a GDAL and no QGIS bug.  Therefore

 Please follow up the ticket you filed in the GDAL TRAC.  Your latest
 comment looks like the explanation Frank Warmerdam requested there and I
 bet the GDAL developers are following their TRAC more closely than ours.
