Comment:

 The jasper support in GDAL was fixed (see
 [http://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/ticket/2399 GDAL Ticket #2399]) and updated
 GDAL package for Ubuntu is available on
 [https://launchpad.net/~qgis/+archive launchpad].

 I filed the new ticket #1474 with a request to make the gdal driver
 selectable.
