 Please try qgis 1.1 from the

 http://les-ejk.cz/ubuntu/

 repository, if I'm not wrong it has qgis compiled against a more recent
 version of gdal (compared to the version available in the launchpad
 repository). Try also qgis 1.2 under windows, you can install it with the
 osgeo4w installer, together with the 1.0.x/1.1.x version.
