 Confirmed: it crashes with the above mentioned error with libgdal1-1.7.0
 Version: 1.7.1-1 from Debian experimental. It crashes with error:

 Error:
         GDAL Error 4: `/home/paolo/Desktop/dem50.aux' not recognised as a
 supported file format.

 During startup - Warning message:
 �w�
 Segmentation fault

 with libgdal1-1.6.0 Version: 1.6.3-4 from Debian testing
