 Yes, it crashes also when I have only the .aux:

 Error:
         GDAL Error 4: `/home/paolo/article.aux' not recognised as a
 supported file format.

 Segmentation fault

 gdalinfo -mm /home/paolo/article.aux gives the same error:

 ERROR 4: `/home/paolo/article.aux' not recognised as a supported file
 format.

 gdalinfo failed - unable to open '/home/paolo/article.aux'.
